The increase of around 1000 people compared to the previous year is largely due to the service sector, which employed a total of 14 335 cross-border commuters in 2022. Compared to 20 years ago, the number of cross-border commuters in the Basel area has increased by 50 percent. BL Business Report Innovation environment Driving force for investments in research and development Northwestern Switzerland is the leading national region in terms of investment in research and development. In 2021, it was responsible for 44 percent of the expenditures made in Switzerland. A total of 16.78 billion Swiss francs had been invested. In an international comparison, Switzerland ranks eighth in terms of private-sector spending on research and development in relation to gross domestic product – also a top figure. While EU countries spend an average of 1.4 percent of their GDP on research and development, the figure in Switzerland is 2.3 percent, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
